Apron at John Lennon Airport
Liverpool is one of the UK's oldest operational airports, the idea of an airfield was first put forward as early as 1928 and the first flight left in 1930. In July 2008 the airport is due to celebrate its 75th Anniversary with the 'official' opening ceremony having taken place on 1 July 1933. "Speke" terminal operated until 1986 when a new terminal was built nearby, and in the following years this was expanded with the massive increase in passengers. In July 2002 Her Majesty The Queen officially opened the new passenger terminal building which was renamed "Liverpool John Lennon Airport" and adopted The Beatles lyric "Above us only sky" as its slogan.
