Blackwell's in the Broad
Blackwell's in the Broad
The world's most famous bookshop, its name forever associated with Oxford. Generations of academics from undergraduates to professors have browsed, purchased and 'liberated' books here to feed their intellectual appetites. The business was founded by Benjamin Henry Blackwell in this building in 1879 and has expanded into many other premises and enterprises (mail order, publishing etc.) all run by members of the Blackwell family.
In 1966 a huge underground area, The Norrington Room, was constructed beneath the shop and formed the largest single book saleroom in the world.
Beyond the shop to the right is part of the New Bodleian Library (1940) on the corner of Broad Street and South Parks Road.
