NZ9111 : Reefs below Saltwick Nab

taken 10 years ago, near to Whitby, North Yorkshire, Great Britain

Reefs below Saltwick Nab
Reefs below Saltwick Nab
These reefs are made of a thin, impure limestone-the Top Jet Dogger. This layer divides the Mulgrave Shale Member of the Whitby Mudstone Formation with the Bituminous Shales above and the Jet Rock below.

Despite being uncovered only at the lowest spring tides the Jet Rock was extensively worked here at one time.

Well-marked jointing in these rocks produces some most unnatural-looking rock pools. NZ9111 : Rock pools below Saltwick Nab
