This railway was built to connect Barnsley with the port of Hull. In this section, it has enormous cuttings and a series of three tunnels (one about a mile long and two short ones) in the southern Yorkshire Wolds as a rival to the NER which took the far simpler route at the flat side of the Humber Estuary a few miles south from here. It was never a real success and was all but closed by the end of the 1950s.
