The St Kildan Wren - a privilege to behold
St Kildan Wren - Troglodytes troglodytes hirtensis. Described as a distinct sub-species in 1884 it shows a tendency of many Hebridean birds to be darker than their mainland cousins. Almost rendered extinct due to egg collecting and specimen hunting, a protection order was placed on the wren by an Act of Parliament in 1904. Their continuity was thus ensured.
