Up to the final quarter of the nineteenth century this road was much used by the "porthmyn" (drovers) to drive cattle and sheep over the mountains on their way to the English markets. The drovers used these traditional routes whenever possible in preference to the new turnpikes as no tolls were charged on these old tracks.
