NZ7002 : Disused workings
taken 16 years ago, 3 km from Botton, North Yorkshire, England
Disused workings
The three mounds are spoil heaps from old coal workings on the moor. Each one has a pit by its side.
There are several places where these workings cover quite an extensive area such as at Rudland Rigg and Rosedale Head.
I have heard that the low-quality coal produced was used in lime kilns.
