This is an instance of pubs being named after a sign. The first paintings of angels hung over pubs represented the Archangel or St Michael, patron saint of soldiers such as the Knights Templar, who put such paintings over a pub not to name it but to show it was under God's protection. The angel is a very easily recognizable symbol which became a name people shortened 'at the sign of the angel' to 'The Angel' when referring to the pub. The sign is painted by Peter Oldreive, who is also a member of the Inn Sign Society.
