Three Ages of Defence - From "The Roughs" above Romney Marsh
In the foreground, right, is a WW2 defensive position covering part of the eastern end of Romney Marsh.

The waterway, left of centre, is a spur of the Napoleonic Royal Military Canal; the Canal proper runs behind the tree line on right of centre. This spur exits just west of the Dymchurch Redoubt (built 1810-14).

Left of centre are the remains of Lemanis, the Roman Saxon Shore fort that protected this section of the coast when most of what is now the Marsh was sea.
