Tin Town - Remains of the Derwent Canteen Wall-lined Beer Cellar
The People's Refreshment House Association ran the canteen on behalf of the Derwent Valley Water Board to control drinking by the workforce during the construction of the Howden and Derwent Dams. However the first landlords were physically thrown out of the canteen by the navvies for limiting drinks. The canteen proved so popular that it was extended twice to cope with demand.
