SO7537 : Obelisk in Eastnor ParkSO7537 : Obelisk InscriptionThe Somers-Cocks ObeliskThe obelisk in Eastnor Park was erected in 1812 and was probably designed by Sir Robert Smirke, architect of the nearby Eastnor Castle. There are inscribed panels on each side of the base: on the north side to the Honourable Edward Cocks who fell at the siege of Burgos in 1812 and in whose memory the obelisk was erected; on the east side to Charles Cocks, first Baron Somers of the new creation (in the peerage of the United Kingdom), who died in 1806; on the south side to Ensign James Cocks who died 1758; and on the west side to Lord Chancellor John Somers, first Baron Somers of the old creation (in the peerage of England), died 1716.
