The cairn replaces a stone erected after the battle of Inverlochy in 1645. Fleeing Campbells, undone by Montrose's sneaky hillbashing flanking movement, passed this way. The stone was put up to mark the point where the MacDonalds gave up the chase.
According to the huge interpretation board nearby, folk add or take away a stone to show their sympathies. Montrose, Alasdair MacColla and the MacDonald's stock seems to be rather high judging by the size of the pile.
