The Visitation, Hexham Abbey
The Visitation, Hexham Abbey
The Visitation can just be seen over the south door of the central passage through NY9364 : Prior Smythson's Screen, Hexham Abbey; these doors originally led via spiral stairs to the pulpitum (loft) for access during High Mass. The painting shows the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, who was soon to give birth to John the Baptist; the two expectant mothers congratulate one another outside a Jerusalem that looks as though it may be modelled on Hexham's Moot Hall see NY9364 : The Moot Hall, Hexham and NY9364 : The Moot Hall and the Old Gaol. {Source: Hexham Abbey Guide p22; and Hexham Abbey Leaflet No.5.}
