St Helen's Well, Market Weighton
St Helen's Well, Market Weighton
Ancient spring on the south side of the dismantled York to Beverley railway line, which is thought to have been used by the Romans (the well that is, not the railway line). In the early days of the railway, churns of water from the well were collected by the first train of the day and used to supply gatehouses and railway cottages along the track. Market Weighton Girl Guides won first prize in a "Keep Britain Tidy" competition after restoring the well in 1985.
