Kiplingcotes Chalk Pit
Kiplingcotes Chalk Pit
Disused chalk pit on the north side of the dismantled York to Beverley railway line in Goodmanham Dale. The pit has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) under Section 28 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. The shallow chalk soil of the flat quarry floor is said to support a wide diversity of calcicolous herbs including felwort, pyramidal orchid, kidney vetch, quaking grass, fairy flax, birdís-foot trefoil, restharrow and carline thistle. Sixteen species of butterfly have also been recorded including grayling, ringlet, meadow brown, common blue, dingy skipper and large skipper. Needless to say, you don't see any of them when it's snowing at Easter.
