Flemish chimney at Rhosson
The Flemings arrived by sea along the coast of South Pembrokeshire in the C12, chased the Welsh into the hills and colonised the coast and low-lying fertile land beyond. Most of these tall, conical, so-called Flemish chimneys are found in the south of the county and sometimes remain standing after the dwelling has crumbled. They were built into the front wall of the cottage close to the door, usually over a bread oven as well as a fireplace.
