Hatfield Main Colliery
Hatfield Main Colliery
Looking north-northwest across the railway tracks from East Lane Drain, west of Bootham Lane. The first shafts were sunk in around 1908 and Hatfield Main was in full production by 1921. The two winding engines were converted from steam to electricity between 1973 and 1975 and workers at the colliery played a major part in the miners strikes of 1969, 1972, 1974 and 1984. Hatfield Main has been operated by companies under different names since British Coal ceased operations here in 1994.

After the Hatfield Coal Company went into receivership in August 2001 the colliery lay dormant for a number of years while the owners tried (and failed) to gain financial support for new business ventures. The colliery appeared to be up and running again when this picture was taken in March 2008.

Hatfield Main was used as a film set for the 1996 film "Brassed Off", and in 1997 for an episode of the BBC drama series "Dalziel and Pascoe".
