River Torridge
River Torridge
Looking downstream from Kismeldon Bridge, or rather from a temporary wooden pedestrian bridge on the downstream side of it. The bridge is currently closed to traffic as it is being rebuilt, and this has repercussions for traffic in local lanes. The bridge "is the first important bridge over the youthful Torridge and is mentioned in 1279. The name is interesting, for it goes back to an early Christian cross in this lonely country (cristelmael, "cross, crucifix") which may have marked a ford at this point." from LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) .
