Lych gate, St John the Baptist Church, Ebbesbourne Wake
In Saxon times the village was called Eblesbuma, in the Domesday Book it was recorded as Eblesborne and in 1249 it was named Ebbelbum Wak. The word Wak or Wake was added in the time of King John (1199-1216) and was taken from the name of Geoffrey de Wak then Lord of the Manor.
