Built in 1859 and enlarged in 1894, the building on Church Street with its portico is quite imposing for a comparatively small settlement. It now doubles as the Village Club.

A glance through the 1881 Census for Eyam shows that, apart from the usual farming and service occupations found in any Victorian village, most men had employment either as lead miners or in the manufacture of boots and shoes. Of mechanics per se there is a conspicuous absence...
