Castleton: Former A625 road (2)
Castleton: Former A625 road (2)
The A625 used to run here, along the east side of Mam Tor and west of Castleton, between Sheffield and Manchester. However the ground is an active landslip area and after many years of trying to keep the road open the highways authority gave in to the inevitable and allowed nature to take its course. This is the central area where at one point, to the right in the photograph, the road has already been entirely lost over its full former width since closure in 1979.
