The Old Woolwich Ferry
The Old Woolwich Ferry
The old Woolwich Ferry pier on the North side of the river as built by the Great Eastern railway to link it's station at North Woolwich with the main town on the South side of the river. The railway abandoned the pier after the LCC intriduced the Free Ferry in the 1880s. At the time of the picture it was in use by a towage company as a base for their tugs. Picture taken about 1959 and scanned from an Agfacolor slide.
