The seven canonised Saxon bishops of Hexham (part 1), former reredos, Hexham Abbey
The reredos, which would originally have been behind an altar, has large paintings of the seven canonised Saxon bishops of Hexham; the three in this image are (from the left): Alchmund, Eata and Wilfrid. {Source: Hexham Abbey Guide, p18.} See NY9364 : 15th C lectern and screen, and former reredos, Hexham Abbey for a general view of the reredos. See NY9364 : The seven canonised Saxon bishops of Hexham (part 2), former reredos, Hexham Abbey for a view of the other four paintings. The paintings were executed in the reign of Edward IV (b1442) who reigned from 1461 to October 1470 and from April 1471 until his death in 1483. The Battle of Hexham on 15th May 1464 marked the end of significant Lancastrian resistance in the north of England during the early part of the reign of Edward IV.
