Surveying a WW2 pillbox at former RAF Windrush
View looks eastwards across the northern part of this former WW2 training airfield. At the time the photo was taken it was being surveyed by English Heritage. The area within the perimeter track (visible in the centre of the picture) is now cultivated with spring cereals. The entrance to the pillbox facing westwards confirms that it was built fundamentally to defend the airfield from enemy parachutists or gliders using the landing strip. This was a great fear in the summer of 1940. The pillbox has a light anti-aircraft position open to the elements on its roof.
