The cliffs here are a splendid example of Jurassic marine shoal sands. Known as the Bridport Sands it is over 40 metres thick. This formation is an important oil reservoir rock underground at the Dorset Oilfield further along the coast near Kimmeridge and these are the best exposures at the surface.
