Sign at the Royal Mile entrance to Old Fishmarket Close. It was once 'a steep, narrow stinking ravine' when used as a poultry and fishmarket. George Heriot who was the founder of the Edinburgh public school Heriots, lived here in 1856. The close leads down to the Cowgate.
