The Avon and Clopton Bridge
In the foreground of this vintage view is the terrace of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. In the background is the 14-arch bridge built around 1490 at the expense of Hugh Clopton, later Lord Mayor of London. At the time this photograph was taken, the bridge was a vital link in the national trunk network carrying no fewer than three major roads (A34 Southampton-Manchester, A46 Bath-Grimsby and A422 Worcester-Bedford) across the Avon. All these routes have now been diverted, leaving the bridge to more local traffic.
