TG1723 : Lichen-covered conifer bark
near to The Heath, Norfolk, Great Britain

Lichen-covered conifer bark
Conifer bark, from several plant species, can absorb ferrous iron such as iron ochre deposition in field drainage systems; trials where bark was placed within nylon mesh sacks and incorporated into the drainage system are reported to have been very successful in that conifer bark, unlike bark from deciduous trees contains only small quantities of soluble phenolic components and hence does not create environmental problems. The bark seen here is on a living tree.
