Evidence for the ramparts of the iron age hillfort remains. It dates from the period 400 BC to 43 AD and was built in two phases. Legend has it that a dragon protected treasure in wells at this fort and a second encampment at nearby Cadbury: the treasure served as offerings to the gods to ensure good harvests. As the dragon was always at the other hilltop its existence could never be proved or disproved. Treasure hunters were apparently deterred from plundering the wells for fear of winged attack. Trees on Dolbury were originally planted by John Veitch, a Scot who landscaped the park for the Acland family in the eighteenth century and later became agent for the estate.
