SY9079 : Washing Ledge and Kimmeridge Bay beach
near to Kimmeridge, Dorset County, Great Britain

Washing Ledge and Kimmeridge Bay beach
In the foreground is Washing Ledge - it is a double-band of dolomite with central parting of oil shale. The two layers can clearly be seen here, with the upper bed and softer shale absent on the left side of the ledge. At high tide the ledge is completely submerged. The gap in the cliffs at the back of the stony beach is Gaulter Gap.
