SY9178 : Coastal footpath on Hen Cliff
near to Kimmeridge, Dorset County, Great Britain

Coastal footpath on Hen Cliff
View towards Broad Bench from Cuddle, above the Kimmeridge Ledges. The path follows the precarious cliff-top from here to the Clavell Tower (visible on the right), where it descends to the eastern side of Kimmeridge Bay. The white chalk cliff in the far distance is at the eastern end of Bindon Hill (named Cockpit Head on the military maps of the area). The local name of 'Cuddle' possibly comes from the word "caudle" which is a miner's term for mud - the cliffs were quarried for blackstone (or Kimmeridge Coal) which was used as fuel.
