SY9178 : Crumbling cliffs at Cuddle
near to Kimmeridge, Dorset County, Great Britain

Crumbling cliffs at Cuddle
The high ground on the right, surmounted by a brick observation post, is named Cuddle (as in 'mess' or 'mud', from the blackstone mining, rather than any cute derivation). In the centre of the photograph the aptly named Yellow Ledge projects out into the sea. This is a dolomite bed that rises westwards in Hen Cliff, and was quarried near Clavell Tower for use in the old pier at the quay in Kimmeridge Bay. Chunks of dolomite fall from the Yellow Ledge bed onto the beach below (out of sight) and provide natural rock armour for the foot of the soft shale cliff. East of Cuddle there is no such natural protection, as seen here, and consequently the cliffs are more eroded.
