SY9277 : Cliffs and beach east of Clavell's Hard
near to Kimmeridge, Dorset County, Great Britain

Cliffs and beach east of Clavell's Hard
Looking down from the cliff-top above Clavell's Hard. The angular blocks on the beach are dolomite, fallen from beds in the cliffs. The seaweedy 'Kimmeridge Ledges' projecting out under the sea are also of dolomite. There is a seam of blackstone in the cliff that dips down to the lower part of the cliffs near the corner. In the 19th century this was mined from adits in the cliffs at Clavell's Hard. The headland in the far distance is St Aldhelm's Head.
