New housing [in 2008] on an old quarry site. The quarries around Bampton provided limestone and an old lime kiln survives nearer the town. J W Scott owned this site from 1919 and stone from his quarries was used to construct the World War II airfields at Chivenor, near Barnstaple and Dunkeswell and Smeatharpe on the Blackdowns [Source: T J Francis: The Industrial Heritage of Bampton, Devon, 2006, 28-30]
