Jacob sheep in Wolterton Park
Jacob sheep in Wolterton Park
The north facade of Wolterton Hall can be seen in the background. Jacob sheep are white sheep with black spots and can have up to six horns; the breed is presumed to originate from Scandinavia. Jacobs were often kept as park sheep, i.e. decorative animals grazed on estates. They are grown for their wool, meat and hides, and occasionally they are being used as 'attack sheep' in the manner of attack dogs in order to protect farm property from vandalism > LinkExternal link

Wolterton Hall > LinkExternal link was built by the architect Thomas Ripley in the 1920s for Horatio Walpole, younger brother of Britain's first Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole. On the death of the 3rd Earl in 1858 the Hall was abandoned until 1905, when the Earl moved back in. Ever since the present Earl inherited the property in 1989 there has been a programme of reorganisation, conservation and research into the rich family history of the Walpoles and the Hall now houses an extensive collection of family portraits.
