Spittle Beck Sheep Dike
Spittle Beck Sheep Dike
Disused sheep wash on Spittle Beck at the corner of Wansford Road and New Bridge Road, Nafferton. When in use, the water level would have been controlled by a sluice gate while a farm hand stood in a wooden tub in the beck to wash the sheep. The sheep would be dumped in one at a time and given a good rubbing in the chemical-free water to try to get a reasonably clean fleece before shearing. The sheep wash fell into disuse in around 1940 but was restored by Nafferton Scout Group in 1991.
