Spitalfields: Buxton Street, E1 & the former Truman Brewery
The former Truman's Brewery chimney looms large over Spitalfields. Trumans, in one guise or another, used this site, known as the Black Eagle Brewery, for brewing from 1666 to 1989, there being an artesian well under Brick Lane, the junction of which with Buxton Street is visible in the distance. The names of some of the streets next to the brewery, such as this one and nearby Hanbury Street, reflect connections with the brewery. Code Street is the cobbled turn to the right.
