Whitechapel: Former Royal Oak public house, Whitechapel Road, E1
This rather fine building must have ceased being a public house some time ago as the retail outlet and the residential flats above appear to be well-established. The only clue to its former life is that the name 'Royal Oak' is carved into the stone tablet immediately below the large semi-circular window. Note too the two bearded figures with uplifted arms supporting the main gable end. Behind the bus and just visible is a passageway to the rear of the public house presumably built originally to allow horse-drawn traffic access.
