Sheep grazing below Fort Williamsburg
Fort Williamsburg at Glynllifon and Fort Belan at Abermenai SH4460 were built by Sir Thomas Wyn during the American War of Indpendence when there was a perceived threat from the French, who had allied themselves with the Americans. In recognition of his role in the defence of the realm, Sir Thomas was awarded a peerage and became the first Lord Newborough. Williamsburg and Belan are believed to be the only two forts in Europe built as a direct result of the American War of Independence.
