Old Powick Bridge over the River Teme
This modest bridge saw events at the start and end of the English Civil Wars. In 1642 the first skirmish happened here. The final battle of the civil wars took place in the fields between here and the River Severn on 3rd September 1651. A largely Scots army was defeated by the Parliamentary forces led by Oliver Cromwell. King Charles II fled to a period of exile in France. The Monarch's Way a Long Distance Footpath starts here and follows his route to freedom. Charles watched the course of the battle from his vantage point on the tower of the cathedral.
