Capstan Winch, Stone Mine, Durlston
This hand, or perhaps horse operated capstan winch was used to drag stone out of the nearby mine once it had been cut. The chain was connected to a sledge on which the stone had been loaded and the ratchet prevented the stone slipping back down the slope into the mine.
