Old Kirk of Kinneff
The kirk site is famed as the hiding place of the Honours of Scotland (the Scottish Crown Jewels) during Cromwell's campaign in Scotland. They had been sent to Dunnottar Castle for safe keeping, but when Cromwell's army besieged the castle in 1652 the minister's wife, Mistress Grainger, smuggled them out of the castle and her husband buried them under the flagstone floor of the kirk, where they remained safe until the Restoration. The present church building was built in 1738, but incorporates parts of its predecessor.
