Lady Spencer’s walk leaves the wood behind (left, southerly) to enter more open ground to the east of Hardwick Hall. It is at this point that the route crosses the stem of the wineglass.

The wineglass is the name given to a planting of two double rows of Lime trees to the east of Hardwick Hall. The bowl of the glass starts in front of the hall where the limes sweep round in two arcs before turning sharply to form the stem, which is a long double avenue leading away from the hall. Hence the name.

This photograph, which is west north-westerly, is looking toward the southern of the double rows of Lime trees that form the stem. The other double row can be seen beyond.

The walk continues north westerly (right and slightly ahead) across the wineglass.
