SE0693 : Old pits on Redmire Moor
3 km from Preston-Under-Scar, North Yorkshire County, Great Britain

Old pits on Redmire Moor
An area of pits and shallow shafts extends over several square km on Redmire Moor. These are old coal pits, taking advantage of coal seams found close to the surface. The shafts are often mistaken for lead mining activity, but lead mine shafts tend to follow the straight lines of veins across the moor, whereas these are scattered about all over the place.
