Leaf beetle
These irridescent beetles [Chrysomela aenea] were very common on Alder leaves, the colours depending on the angle of view, from red, green, blue, to gold. They are in the chrysomelid family, which has about 2500 species in Britain, and includes the Colorado potato beetle. C. aenea is a widespread, but mainly northern and western, species. Thanks to Dr K. Bland for identification.
