TL4242 : Wasp beetle (Clytus arietis)

near to Flint Cross, Cambridgeshire, Great Britain

Wasp beetle (Clytus arietis)
Wasp beetle (Clytus arietis)
The wasp beetle is a member of the Cerambycidae family, but lacks the spectacularly long antennae typical of this group, commonly called "long-horned beetles". It is regarded as an example of Batesian mimicry, that is, it benefits from reduced predation on account of its resemblance to venomous wasps and bees which predators learn to avoid. (But the resemblance is not at all close ...)

This insect was found basking on the support pole of a corner chevron sign, to which I had padlocked my bicycle.
