Auchindrain was a township where families farmed land as tenants-in-common. The system developed in the middle ages and most townships lasted until the late 18th Century when they were replaced by crofting with each family having specific land, or by large farms or estates with the tenants cleared away. But the Duke of Argyll kept Auchindrain on the township system - it was visited by Queen Victoria to see the "primitive village". The houses, barns and some land of Auchindrain are now a museum showing the township way of life. See museum website LinkExternal link .
