This bridleway is part of a route from Brund in Staffordshire (behind the viewpoint) to Pilsbury in Derbyshire (ahead).

It is possible that this bridleway may once have been a packhorse route.
Certainly the lower section was, carrying a route from Pilsbury bridge (now a ford) to Sheen.

The hill on the other side of the Upper Dove Valley (partly obscured by the trees) is Carder Low. The village of Hartington lies about 2½ kilometres to the south (along the valley to the right).
