Berkhamsted Castle is unusual in having a double moat - the one pictured is the inner one.
This castle is said to have played host to one of the most important events in English history, when the crown of England was handed over to the conquering William by the Saxon nobles, notably Edgar the Atheling who would have succeeded Harold had the Normans been sent packing.
