Watford Staircase Locks, Northamptonshire
This shows the bottom three (of four) chambers in the staircase. The full lock (No 5 of the whole Watford flight of seven) is in the foreground awaiting a descending narrowboat, while another boat is just visible moored below Lock No 3, waiting to come up. All crews need to report to the lock keeper for instructions before entering the staircase, or entering the top lock to start their passage down. The locks are open 0800-1900 mid April-Oct, but only until 1500 in winter.
